[Dprglist] Rodney Brooks' annual predictions update, and David Anderson was right

Paul,

Don't be sad! Another way to look at it is that we humans are much better at what we do than most realize.

So much of what we do is so effortless for us that the assumption is made that it must also be easy for machinery. Experienced roboteers such as yourself might have reason to believe otherwise... ;)

Happiest of New Years!

It's always instructive, though a bit depressing, to read Rodney Brooks' (inventor of the Roomba, Baxter, and other robots) review of his 2018 predictions about when things would happen:

Predictions Scorecard, 2024 January 01 – Rodney Brooks

When I was preparing to work in robotics in 2009 - 2013, David Anderson would occasionally opine that self-driving is way harder than everyone thinks, and that it wouldn't happen for a very long time. I headed in that direction anyway, and had a very nice career segment, thank you very much. That said, given recent events at Cruise, and other data further explained in the article, I have to sadly concede that David was right.

Hats off to you (sadly) Sir [Emoji]

Paul
