[Dprglist] RP LiDAR

I have RPLidar A1M8 and A2M8.
I have mainly been using their frame_grabber.exe UI from Releases · Slamtec/rplidar_sdk · GitHub for quick visualization of the data and to make sure the Lidar still works.
I do have RoboStudio installed but I’m not sure if I ever had it working. It certainly did not work for me just now (but it insisted on updating itself when I ran it just now, so maybe something has changed).
Although they say you can use RoboStudio to evaluate their lidars, I get the impression RoboStudio t is really more designed to connect to robots that are outfitted with their “SlamWare” module. It doesn’t seem to have an option to connect to anything via Serial.

Has anybody worked with Slamtec RPLiDAR. I got my unit a few days ago and I am unable to get it recognized on Windows 10 in the RoboStudio application though I can see it recognized as a COM port?

Karim,
There is a few seconds about an HS robotics team. Gears of Fire at

This should be required viewing for all engineering students. Some of this
stuff in this 22min video took me a decade to learn!

Last week at RBNO, Ray brought up the new ST's VL53L5CXV0GC/1 multi zone
ToF LiDAR sensor (max range: 4 meters, resolution: 8x8. FOV: not specified,
cost: VL53LCX-SATEL breakout board $20 at DigiKey or X-NUCLEO-53L5AI
daughter board at Mouser for $36.25). This one would take some
experimenting to evaluate.
I attended a Terabee webinar on Wednesday that featured their new 3Dcam VGA
industrial camera (max range: 5 meters, resolution: 640x480, FOV: 90x67.5
deg,, speed: 30 fps, cost: $1065 at Mouser - not stocked). Pricey, but real
nice. They do offer a non-industrial camera with less resolution (80x60
pixels), for $303.
The Terabee offering seems inferior to the OpenCV OAK-D-LITE (max range: 18
meters, resolution: 640x480, FOV: 72.9x57.7 deg, speed: 30 fps, cost: ~$90.
builtin AI: Movidius) offering that is currently on KickStarter. This is
the one I'm going with. I should mention that unlike the other depth
cameras discussed, it isn't a LiDAR ToF based system.
This morning Sparkfun highlighted Cygbot's Dual Solid-State TOF LiDAR,
CygLiDAR D1, in an email (max range: 2D- 8 meters/ 3D- 2 meters,
resolution: 2D- 0.75 deg / 3D- 160x60, FOV: 2D- 120 deg / 3D- 120x65 deg,
speed: 15 fps, cost: $170). The short 3D range is a concern and it didn't
change my mind, I could get 2 OAK-D-LITEs during the Kickstarter campaign
for the same cost. After the Kickstarter campaign for the OAK-D-LITE is
over and the price goes to $150, this one could be a contender if you
really wanted a LiDAR ToF solution.
Regards,
Doug P.

Thanks for the summary. I was going to focus on the Intel real sense,
but with the real sense line being discontinued I was looking for other
possible choices. I've been debating for a while which route to go and
I've decided on Oak-D-Lite. Backed the Kickstarter today.

For completeness, there is also the lineup from Espros.
I started experimenting with the epc611 module, available in two
configurarions, one for range finding
https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/espros-photonics-ag/TOFrange-611/10516871
and the other for imaging
https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/espros-photonics-ag/TOFcam-611/10516851?s=N4IgTCBcDaIKYAcDGA2AjGkBdAvkA
(same chip and same driver, just configured differently for the
application and the housing). Has an 8x8 ToF sensor, easy to interface
driver. Got it hooked up to a Nucleo-32 evaluation board and it works
rather nicely - biggest issue was figuring out how to configure the CRC
to match the driver.
The big brother (and fairly new) is the epc635 with 160x60 sensor field:
https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/espros-photonics-ag/TOF-CAM-635/10516857
I have no experience with this one.
If I ever manage to attend one of your RBNO meetings (still business
hours on my end) I can give a demo.
Have fun,
Markus
