[Dprglist] Dimensions of gadgets on robots

How much space can a robot sensor take up? Smaller is always better, but what is tolerable?
Would a gadget that is six inches long be a little bit better, or a whole lot better, than a gadget that is 8 or 9 inches long? The other dimensions would likely be half an inch square.
Would a gadget that also served as the carrying handle be especially useful, or would that just be a novelty?
