[Dprglist] BeagleBone - enable UART?

I'm using a BeagleBoneBlack and having difficulty enabling UART1.   By
default UART1 is not enabled.   The pins are configured as GPIO not UART.
 I've read instructions online how to do this but despite quite a bit of
attempts I still do not have this working.

Anyone have experience with this?
