John,
    Some answers to your questions.

Q: Does the robot have to stay within its size limits all during the run, or can it grow beyond the limits after it starts moving?
A: Current rules says the robot must stay within its size limits all during the run. The current size/wt limits are 48”x 48”x 48” and 50 lbs. That is a good size robot.

Q: Can the robot send out scouts during its run?
A: Current rules says “The robot may not split into multiple parts but it may change shape as long as all parts stay connected and within the 48x48x48 envelope”.

Q: Does the robot have to stay on the ground?
A: Yes. I think this is a rule that will not change due to the possible liability. However a possible rule change would be to extend the 48” height limit, allowing taller masts.

If you wish to pursue a unique method of accomplishing the contest’s objectives, talk to us. Rules can be changed. We are all into this for the fun of it. We love to see innovation.

BTW, here is a link to the existing rules (https://dprgblog.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/robocolumbusplus_v1_02-20150726.pdf).

Regards,
Doug P.

Subject: [Dprglist] RoboColumbus rules question

Folks:

I admit I haven't read the rules, but I will ask anyway:

Does the robot have to stay within its size limits all during the run, or can it grow beyond the limits after it starts moving?

Can the robot send out scouts during its run? (or is that restriction covered in the size limitation?)

Does the robot have to stay on the ground?

OK. Back to useful work now.

John Swindle
