[Dprglist] Fwd: [parts] Cheap robotics platform

The grinch has become involved in this group-buy "experiment."

Without all the gory details, shipping has jumped in price and there was a
problem with a refused release of the shipment combined with a holiday
shutdown. The long and the short is that we can't think of this as a
stocking stuffer. Shipping costs have jumped twice to $615 and at the same
time the robots are stuck at the originating warehouse until they reopen on
January 13th. And then it'll take 5 days to ship. Best case.

So there will be a lengthy delay. At the same time I received many
inquiries off-list regarding the availability of these robots. So this is
my shared response. Of the 3 who were early-in, Chris has released his
claim given additional shipping needed in his case. If either Ezra or David
want to release their "reservation", let me know and I'll return your
money.

Depending on what they decide, I'll have a better sense of how many will be
available. I haven't quite yet decided if I want 2 of them. I wish I had
more of them to make available.

Because of the uncertain shipping situation, I plan to wait until I hear
the shipment is underway. Then I'll get back to those of you who have
expressed interest to let you know the cost I'll have to charge. Again, my
goal is simply to not have to charge myself more than others. Then it will
be first come first serve. If nothing else changes we're probably looking
just north of $400 per robot, before possible further shipping from Dallas.
If that's too much, let me know and I'll take you off the interest list.

This is a sight-unseen purchase. None of us know whether any of the
electronics on board are usable - but they're most likely obsolete. The
robots could vary in condition. It's not expected that a cursory visual
inspection will reveal much about the state of each robot. To share the
risk, I'll ask opt-in folks to commit and pay while the robots are in
transit. If a participant wants to kick in some extra, priority of pick
(after I get pick of the litter) will go in order of the share bourne. If
there are any robots un-optioned, I'll try to sell them on ebay for some
kind of profit.

There is an interesting hackaday project about resurrecting a sister model
of this robot:
https://hackaday.io/project/175890-fixing-up-an-old-pioneer-3-dx

In that page the author found a manual for a more recent edition of the
robot:
https://data2.manualslib.com/pdf7/144/14374/1437347-omron_adept_mobilerobots/pioneer_3.pdf?133d45e569bf1c7561cbc006f686721d
(note that this manual refers to an on-board computer that would not be
present on this earlier model)

Best,

Karim
